Entries penned during the Civil War provide information on soldiers returning home after the war, list of promotions in 1864, record of soldiers' deaths, information on his son John W. Becknell, where he fought and how he died, reported casualty statistics for Confederate and Union troops, list of staff officers killed at Sharpsburg [Antietam, Md.], and dates when his sons left for war.
